The latest version of Windows’ popular operating system (OS), Windows 10, is coming to PCs, laptops and mobile devices near you sometime this summer.
And, for the first time ever, Microsoft are offering the full versions of Windows 10 Home, Windows 10 Mobile and Windows 10 Pro as a free upgrade for qualifying Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1 devices that upgrade within a the first year of the launch of Windows 10. Here, we’ll briefly introduce the different editions of Windows 10, their new features and their differences.
Introducing Windows 10 Editions
As with other Windows operating systems, there will be different editions of Windows 10, which will be tailored for various devices and uses. These different editions will address specific needs of various customers, from consumers to small businesses to the largest enterprises.
Windows 10 Home is a desktop edition of the OS, designed for the consumer market. It offers a familiar and personal experience for PCs, tablets and 2-in-1s. As well as standard features, such as Windows Photos, Maps, Mail, Calendar, Music and Video apps, Windows 10 Home includes new features, such as; Windows digital assistant, Cortana, the new Microsoft Edge web browser, Continuum tablet mode for touch-capable devices and Windows Hello face-recognition, iris and fingerprint login.
Microsoft are also integrating the Xbox gaming experience into Windows 10, giving games and gamers access to the Xbox Live gaming community. This will enable users to capture and share gameplay and giving Xbox One owners the ability to play their Xbox One games from any Windows 10 PC in their home.
Windows 10 mobile will deliver a vastly improved user experience on touch-centric mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. Windows 10 Mobile boasts the same universal Windows apps that are included in the Home edition, as well as a new version of Office which is optimised for touch. In addition, Windows 10 Mobile will enable some mobile devices to use the Continuum for phone feature, so people can use their phone like a PC when connected to a display screen.
Windows 10 Pro is a desktop edition for a wide range of devices, such as PCs, tablets and 2-in-1s. With all the features of Windows 10 Home, it also has many extra features to meet the diverse needs of small businesses. Windows 10 Pro helps users manage their devices and apps, protect their sensitive business data, support remote and mobile productivity as well as take advantage of different cloud technologies. Windows 10 Pro also lets customers take advantage of the new Windows Update for Business, which will reduce management costs, offer more controls over update deployment, quicker access to security updates and provide access to the latest innovation from Microsoft on an on-going basis.
Windows 10 Enterprise builds on Windows 10 Pro, adding advanced features which will meet the demands of SMEs and larger-sized organisations. This edition will provide advanced capabilities to help protect against the ever-growing range of modern security threats targeted at devices, identities, applications and sensitive company information. Windows 10 Enterprise also supports the broadest range of options for OS deployment and comprehensive management tools for devices and apps.
Windows 10 Enterprise will be available to Volume Licensing customers, meaning they can take advantage of the features and benefits of the latest operating system, on an on-going basis. And as with prior versions of Windows, Active Software Assurance customers in Volume Licensing can upgrade to Windows 10 Enterprise as part of their existing Software Assurance benefits.
Windows 10 Education is designed to meet the needs of schools, their staff, administrators, teachers and students. Windows 10 Education builds on Windows 10 Enterprise, and this edition will be available through academic Volume Licensing. Microsoft has also set up paths for schools and students using Windows 10 Home and Windows 10 Pro devices to transition to the Windows 10 Education upgrade.
- Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise
Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise will deliver a higher level customer experience to business customers using smartphones and tablets. This edition offers the great productivity, security and mobile device management capabilities that Windows 10 Mobile provides, and adds flexible ways for businesses to manage updates. This edition will be available to Volume Licensing customers meaning Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise users will benefit from the latest security and innovation features as soon as they are available.
There will also be versions of Windows 10 Enterprise and Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise for industry devices like ATMs, retail point of sale, handheld terminals and industrial robotics and Windows 10 IoT Core for small footprint, low cost devices like gateways.
