Gaia is the name the European Space Agency has given to one of its missions. Launched on December 19th 2013, the Gaia spacecraft aims to among other things, create a 3D map of astronomical objects within our Galaxy, the Milky Way. Over the next 5 years, it is hoped Gaia will scan the cosmos, measuring the positions and movements of up to 1 Billion Stars! However, this is thought to be only 1% of the stellar population of the Galaxy! Hopefully this mission should give astronomers answers to some of the important questions about how the Galaxy was formed and evolved.
